Employment at both the national level and in Krapina-Zagorje County grew prior to 2008, whereas in 2009 employment fell by 1.9% in the Republic of Croatia, and 3.9% in the Krapina-Zagorje County. The fall in employment is a result of the global economic crisis that has affected the Republic of Croatia, with respect to the proportion of the Krapina-Zagorje County to total employment in Croatia, no significant decline was recorded as is shown in Table 8.

According to data from the Croatian Pension Insurance Institute valid for 30/9/2010, there were 34,318 active insured persons registered in the Krapina-Zagorje County, which is 0.5 % more than in December of the previous year. In the period prior to the onset of the economic crisis, the number of people covered by pension insurance increased, while the number of unemployed persons decreased, whereas the 2009 recession year was marked by a reduction in the number of those insured and a slight increase in unemployment, which is still below the national average in the Republic of Croatia.
